Fog City News

Fog City News Fog City News has a reputation for being the best source of foreign newspapers and magazines in San Francisco, and their international customers won’t settle for the average Kit Kat available at most newsstands. To meet the demand, Fog City News stocks a variety of the world’s best chocolates and customers pass rows of Scharffenberger, Cote D’Or, Bernard Castelain and many other fine varieties on their way to the magazine racks in the back.

The store still looks and feels like a newsstand and won’t sweep you away with atmosphere, but the staff is knowledgeable and the selection is sublime. When asked which one is the best, the owner responded, “They’re all good, or I wouldn’t stock them.” During my visit they had a free sample of Fran’s Coconut Gold Bar, made with pure white chocolate, moist coconut and fresh cream; so fresh it requires eating it within the first three weeks or it will become sour milk. I also tried a piece of the Amadei Porcelana bar, which claims to be the first chocolate in the world made from the Porcelana bean, a genetically pure strain of the Criollo bean. Both the owner and I are suspicious of this claim, but the bar was smooth and filled with enjoyable, tangy flavors nonetheless. Fog City News will even reimburse you for bringing them new chocolate samples, as if you didn’t need a reason to search the world for chocolate already.
