One Day, Two Great Classes

The first week of spring is here, and it’s time to think ahead to warmer days and colder desserts coming our way with the change in weather. In the next few weeks I expect to have my jacket packed, iced coffee in hand, and be looking for the best ice cream the city has to offer. To help us find that perfect frozen treat, Bobbie Meyzen, owner of Crème Crémaillère Ice Cream, is hosting the Great American Ice Cream Tasting at the New School in New York City on May 14. He promises to teach us about the “sensory, aesthetic, and technical factors” involved in ice cream and make us smile with plenty of the cold stuff. The class also includes a blind taste to determine your favorite brand of ice cream, independent of fancy packaging or famous name.

If warm, baked goods are still your preference by May 14, the New School is also offering a class from my favorite cookbook author and baker, Carole Walter. Students will learn to make a chocolate cream tart with nutty cornmeal crust, strawberry cheese crêpes, a pineapple macadamia tea ring, and giant cookies that Carole calls “rocky road garganchewas”. Carole Walter is a true veteran in the baking world and her classes always fill quickly, so register now if interested.
