They offer creatively named treats like “Vanilla Woofers”, “Beagles”, “SnickerPoodles” and “Slab O’ rrrRRRibs” and even throw a bone to cat lovers with the “Whole Kitten Caboodle.” Dog lovers can sniff out stores in more than 13 states, or fill their shopping “bassets” with treats from the online store.

Everyone knows the way to a dog’s heart is through their stomach, and if you can’t get to the bakery you can make your own homemade treats with ingredients found at your local grocery store.

The biggest dog lover I know, Kristin, graciously sent me a link to this recipe after making treats for her dog Sam. Sam is used to the royal treatment, and these biscuits did not disappoint. Keep in mind that since the ingredients are fresh and without preservatives, you will have to keep the biscuits refrigerated; they only last a few days.

Winn-Dixie’s Peanut Butter Doggie Treats
Recipe from the Because of Winn-Dixie website

1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup veg oil
2 eggs
3 tblsp peanut butter
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup oats
2 cups flour

Preheat Oven to 400. Mix water, oil, eggs, peanut butter and vanilla together. In a separate bowl whisk flour, cornmeal and oats together, then stir them in the wet mixture to form ball.

Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut dog treats into dog bone or other shapes. Bake on greased non stick cookie sheet for 20 minutes. Turn the oven off and let them cool for one hour. Store them in air tight container. Makes 1-2 dozen. FOR DOGS ONLY!
