Every spring I eat one Cadbury Creme Egg, and this year, I had it fried. During Brooklyn Restaurant Week Andrew and I went to the Chipshop in Park Slope, where they offered a three course meal for $10.55. Choices for each course varied, but most of it was fried. One option was a fried macaroni appetizer, fish and chips, and British-style pudding for dessert (surprisingly, not fried). When it came time for dessert, I noticed a small sign in the corner of the shop saying they offered deep fried Cadbury Creme Eggs for $2. My meal already came with pudding, but I wanted to embrace the fried theme of the day and try the egg as well.
Frying chocolate bars is a supposedly a common thing to do in the UK, especially in Scotland where 20% of fish and chip shops offer some sort of fried candy (usually a Mars Bar). I have been to the UK several times and never seen it for sale, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to finally see how they achieved this magical creation without creating a big, melted mess. When the fried Cadbury Creme Egg came to our table it looked exactly like you would imagine; a fried little round ball, dusted in powdered sugar (just what every Cadbury Creme Egg needs, more sugar). After I cut into it with a fork, the warm yellow and white filling spilled out.

Forgive the bad camera phone pictures, it is all I had available.
My first bite tasted a bit soggy. I was hoping for a french-fry style crunch, but it was more chewy than crisp. The chocolate and sugary insides were good, but it didn’t seem to blend well with the fried exterior. I left Andrew to finish the egg, and I returned to my pudding.
I can finally say I’ve tried deep fried chocolate, which was really the point afterall. Even if I loved the deep fried egg, I could never eat it regularly without feeling like I was unecessarily taking years off of my life. In case you can’t make it to Scotland anytime soon, I recommend traveling to the Chipshop in Brooklyn to try it for yourself. Easter is already a great excuse to eat chocolate, why not make it fried?
Happy Easter!

You are way braver than I am. I have a very hard time eating even a bite out of one. There is something out there for everyone.
Well, I would have to say that I would opt for “Fried Peanut Butter Eggs!” I don’t think I would need Andrew or anyone else to finish it for me. But you’ve had another “Chocolate” experience!
Well I think I’ll be sticking with the original egg, that doesn’t look too appealing, Happy Easter anyways!
I just tripped across a post the other day where they deep fried macaroni and cheese. Now this. Everything, from twinkies to candy bars, are getting dunked in the deep frier. While these might not call out to me, you get points for creativity, indeed.
Cheers!
I will have to say that being adventurous can become a bit deadly(LOL)! I tried vanilla ice cream accompanied by fried cheesecake topped with mango and strawberry sauces. Now that was a experience that I care not to repeat. Everything tasted delicious except the cheesecake. Go figure…
